The Slip / Marathon
Big Day
So this past Monday was a big day here in Boston. Not only was it Marathon Monday here and I got off from work, but this year I was a little closer to the racers and their cause. This year my girlfriend was running in the race for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - "Team in Training". I'm extremely proud of her and at the same time I'm very happy it is over. While I wasn't out there every morning in the bitter cold winters of Boston running mile after mile training with her, I was there to see how stressful it can be to prepare for such an event. But it was all worth it in the end.
The Slip
Now for some music I saw this weekend. The Slip is a band that has been together for a little over ten years now. They have a very strong following and a close relationship with many of their strongest supporters. But for some time now, The Slip has been what I want to call in label limbo. For awhile they tried going the "True" independent label route by going it alone and putting out their own albums, which by the way are all worth purchasing here.
I have been one of those strong supporters for some time now and since that time a lot of what I listen to has changed. But so has The Slip. I really feel that these three guys - Brad Barr, Andrew Barr and Mark Freedman - are three of the most talent musicians out there today. However, their music has yet to break a seal. Their older songs had a great form to them and allowed the group to be able to experiment during live shows - similar to other jam bands - but only similar in that they were able to experiment. Their experimentation reached different levels of musicianship.
But over time, The Slip, as well as I, started to take some what of a different outlook on music. I have been told that their new album is outstanding and that it has the ability to really bust them loose. Unfortunately, even in this independent / blogger / hipster world we live in, labels do mean a whole lot. Especially when your band has been around for some time and you've developed a certain image.

Anyway, I would encourage that you go out and see them live. They are playing tomorrow at CODA in NYC. At times, their shows can be a bit eratic, not always staying true to form and on occasions having a very Slippy moment. When I say Slippy moment I mean they get very sentimental and start doing some hippy stuff. But the rest of the time they are producing some of the best sounds around.
